October 10 · Zijun YuWas super excited to find that our Airbnb this trip was just a short walk from this place that has been saved on my “want to go” list for the last two years, but the experience was sadly quite disappointing. I’m usually a fairly forgiving diner, and I’ve been playing the role of apologist among my dining party for all the foibles of the evening, but regardless of the circumstances that led to it, we had a mediocre experience, and I expected better of a place the rumor mill has as a favorite for a Michelin star.Our night happened to be the first night they were requiring all parties to get the tasting menu — no problem, I love tasting menus. This isn’t exactly a tasting menu, though, as you still have to make your own family-style selections — it’s more just a forced minimum food purchase quantity. And if you have any diners in your party with dietary restrictions, be prepared to navigate the experience of accommodating them yourself, as the menu offers no hints about what dishes are vegetarian, pescatarian, vegetarian-possible with substitutions, etc. — and the noise level and acoustics of the building make it impossible to have an actual conversation with your server, regardless of how familiar they might be with all the options available (“did he say cabbage or catfish?”). A table of 4 has to order 2 curries and 2 sides, but several of the curries already come with a side, so if you’re trying to have a diverse and non-repetitive experience, good luck with that, too. The whole point of a tasting menu is to free the diners of these tedious decisions and still let them leave feeling like they got to enjoy the best curated experience the restaurant has to offer — not to mention dramatically simplifying prep for the folks in the back, I’m sure; this forced excess family style instead serves no one’s interests, complicating and crappifying the experiences back of house and front of house alike.On to the food — sometimes mediocre ambiance or questionable service is still more than adequately balanced by spectacular quality in the dishes. Not so, at least not the night we were there: while I thought every dish was fine, none stood out to me at the end as exceptional. This dish was too salty, that one excessively spicy (and we all love spicy food), the other one not quite hot anymore by the time it came out — maybe one dish was actually pretty good, but just not quite as good as a similar dish we’ve enjoyed at a different restaurant back home. The desserts were maybe the standout, but dessert’s not the reason we came to this place. As if to pre-seed the injury with insult, the amuse bouche that came before the ordered courses was itself served with complete disregarded for the party’s dietary restrictions — fortunately we we were able to catch “chicken” in the verbal description so the pescatarian could steer clear.To revert slightly to “apologist” mode, we were one of the last tables seated, and I’m sure everyone was wiped out after what turned out to be a rough transition to Friday required “tasting menu” mode — but the fact that we had to wait 20 minutes past our reservation time just to be seated and possibly as long again to order only set the stage for the negative vibes to come.I understand they’re trying something new here, but it’s not working yet. Hopefully they’re open to the feedback required to right the ship.
October 11 · William LovasKalaya proves itself again and again to be a restaurant powerhouse. The tasting menu just keeps giving with endless amount of food for all of us (4). We had leftovers for two days after the visit! From our tasting menu, we selected quite a good variety of proteins, such as crab, steak, chicken curry and fish. Our favorite was the chicken curry. Eventually at some point of the night, the spices from each dish sort of blended together, so it was difficult to tell which I was trying at the time. However, when we ate all these food again as leftover, it’s as if the flavors really set in and become more distinct! Kalaya is definitely not for the faintest of the customers, as it really punches its weight with the unique spices that go into Thai cuisine!
October 07 · KeeksFirst time at Kalaya today after all the news we've read and all recommendations from friends/social media.We had the 'Taste of Kalaya' tasting menu. The dumplings are very well done, everything else are seasoned pretty well. The only thing we felt off was the river prawn dish, as the prawn had some odd smell that weirded us out. The manager quickly stopped by our table and explained the reason why it had the distinct smell, and she gave us an extra Thai shaved ice dessert as a complimentary even though we had Thai tea tiramisu (in which both are very tasty). They also gave us a new mushroom side dish for to-go box even though we didn't finish that plate. I'm very satisfied with the top notch hospitality/friendliness our staff and waiters/waitresses here.In conclusion, since we've had authentic Thai foods in Thailand and some other states (the DC one is still my top favorite), I'm pretty sure this place is pretty good, but somewhat underwhelming for its price point. For the service, you all are wonderful.
September 27 · Khoa PhamWe’d been wanting to try Kalaya for a while and are so glad we finally did!Though our bar reservation was on the earlier side, the place was already buzzing when we arrived. Our server, Carissa, was fantastic—she took time to walk us through the menu and offer thoughtful recommendations, especially since it was our first visit. Everything is served family-style, which makes it fun to sample multiple dishes.We started with the kanom jeeb nok—adorable bird-shaped dumplings filled with caramelized cod and preserved radish. Don’t let their cuteness fool you—they pack a nice kick by the end! Next came the gui chai, crispy garlic chive rice cakes with a spicy-sweet soy sauce—an ideal follow-up to the spicy dumplings.For our main, we shared the khao mun klone—squid ink rice with Gulf shrimp, colossal crab, and local squid, served with yum hon dang. It was phenomenal: perfectly cooked rice and incredibly fresh seafood. We also ordered the tua waan pad kapi (snap peas with ground pork), which wasn’t our favorite. But Carissa didn’t hesitate to suggest a swap, and within a minute, the hed prad kratiam (stir-fried local mushrooms with crispy garlic and chilis) arrived—an excellent pairing with the rice dish.Overall, Kayala delivered on all fronts: amazing food, warm and attentive service, and a vibrant atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back.
