Betong - Khao Man Gai Introduce
For New Yorkers craving authentic Thai street food that centers around one of Southeast Asia's most beloved comfort dishes, **Betong - Khao Man Gai** presents a must-visit destination in the heart of Lower Manhattan. Located within the vibrant atmosphere of the Canal Street Market, this eatery specializes in the dish that shares its name: **Khao Man Gai**, which translates literally to "chicken fat rice," known more broadly as Thai Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Betong distinguishes itself not only by focusing on this Thai-style chicken and rice but also by being a certified **Halal restaurant**, offering a valuable and sought-after option for the Muslim community and others who prefer Halal-certified cuisine in Downtown NYC. Furthermore, the business proudly identifies as both **Asian-owned** and **LGBTQ+ owned**, and is led by **women-owned** management, contributing to the diverse and inclusive tapestry of the city's culinary landscape.
The experience here is all about straightforward, delicious, and hearty Thai comfort food, designed for quick, satisfying meals. The menu is a curated selection built around the star ingredient—chicken—prepared with traditional Thai techniques. Patrons have the choice of the classic, tender **Steamed Chicken Over Rice** or the flavorful, smoky **Grilled Chicken Over Rice**, with the option to combine both in the popular **Combo Chicken Rice** set. Beyond the signature dish, the menu extends to other Thai street food favorites like curries, noodles, and the essential **Papaya Salad**.
While some reviews mention a desire for a stronger, more distinct Thai flavor in certain items and note the portions relative to the price point, the concept remains a popular one, often praised for its dedicated service, convenience, and unique Halal offering.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The chicken was tender, but the rice had a little flavor. The price is expensive in comparison to the quantity. Thai tea is unable to made less sweet. I was quite dissatisfied with the taste. It lacks the distinct flavor of Thai cuisine. One positive aspect is the excellent service!
August 11 · Namkwann (NK)Be sure to check out @betong before it closes on December 27th inside Canal Street market. Although I didn’t like it, everyone should just try it once to see whether or not they like it. Everyone has different taste buds and likes. I didn’t like it because it was way too greasy and sugary. I didn’t like its taste. Everything was way too oily and greasy from the bun to the rice platter. It was also too sugary as well. The portion size was good, and it fills you up. This place was also over priced, my entire meal was $20. I expected more from this place. There are places to seat inside the market place. My food also came out at a medium pace. Out of everything, I liked the Thai iced tea the most.Price: $21.39 💸Rating: 5/10
December 20 · Tasnia ShahOmggg if I could give this place 10 stars I would. We stumbled in here after going to the Banksy Museum and the smell as soon as you walk in is amazing!! It’s towards the back on the right side. The service was gentle and accommodating. The food was beyond mouthwatering!!!! They were so friendly and let us sit right up front to eat comfortably. I had the #5 (chicken tom yum noodle with chicken bun) and my partner had #6 (salmon curry middle with chicken bun) my boyfriend devoured his food and left a nice tip! We also had Thai lemon iced tea which has a nice small kick to it I’m not sure what spice but it’s perfect. The noodles with the chicken are a little spicy but not too spicy. The broth for the salmon is creamy and a little thick. I would come back here a million times. The music, atmosphere, great food & service were unbeatable and affordable prices.
November 24 · Kiara ColonFriendly service in the busy Canal Street Market. You can either order and pay at the kiosk (4% fee), or order at the counter and pay cash. Betong seemed to be busier than some of the other food vendors. It’s nice to be able to see into the food prep area as your meal is being made. The food looks as good as the pictures on the menu. There’s a bit of a wait as the food is prepared but it’s worth it. If you’re in a group, use the wait time to secure seating.
June 15 · Quentin HodgesLocated in the canal street market, a hidden gem, fully halal menu.We got the chicken curry and grilled chicken and rice. The chicken is very tender, don’t need teeth, the green curry is spicy and aromatic, and the rice is just perfect.Service is professional, staff is respectful and food came out fast.Highly recommend, give it a try!
