Awesome, awesome, awesome! This place just reopened and is really great. Their happy hour specials include 2 dollar beers and great prices on cocktails. I had a veggie fish plate which I had never heard of before, but it tasted delicious. The service was top notch, our waiter brought out the manager/owner and they made us a list of places to see on our upcoming trip to Thailand. We'll be bringing them photos upon our return! - Nic Stark

Esan Introduce

Discovering authentic and regionally specific Thai food in the heart of New York City is a delight for any local food enthusiast, and Esan Thai, located in Murray Hill, is precisely that hidden gem. Recognized by some as Lan Larb, this restaurant specializes in the distinctive, bold, and flavor-forward cuisine of the Isan (or Esan) region of Thailand, which encompasses the Northeastern provinces. Esan cuisine is celebrated for its unique use of fresh herbs, chili, and fermented flavors, offering a culinary experience that goes beyond the standard Pad Thai and green curry found at many Thai establishments.

The restaurant provides a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, where the focus is firmly on delivering a high-quality, memorable dining experience. The enthusiasm for Thai culture extends beyond the plate; previous customers have noted the exceptional service, even mentioning staff members going out of their way to provide travel tips for an upcoming trip to Thailand—a testament to the warm, personal touch that sets this local business apart.

While the exact, comprehensive menu is extensive, the offerings are known to feature savory Thai classics alongside surprising signature dishes. For instance, customers have praised unique finds like a "veggie fish plate," indicating a creative and dedicated approach to vegetarian options. The kitchen prides itself on its flavorful and satisfying dishes, which include a variety of classic Thai preparations such as noodles, curries, fried rice, and unique regional specialties from the North.

Signature elements found on the menu often include a variety of Som Tum (papaya salad), which is central to Esan cuisine, offered in styles like the classic NY Som Tum, the traditional Thai Som Tum, and the more adventurous E-San Som Tum with pickled crab. The commitment to vegetarian-friendly dining is significant, with a separate designation as a Vegetarian restaurant, ensuring that those seeking plant-based options have plenty of creative and authentic choices, making it a great find for diverse dining groups.

Other popular categories typically include a diverse range of Curries—such as Red Curry, Green Curry, Panang Curry, and Massaman Curry—all customizable with various protein choices. The Fried Rice menu is equally diverse, featuring options like Spicy Basil Fried Rice, Pineapple Fried Rice, and specialty preparations like Green Curry Fried Rice. For meat lovers, there are specialties like Tiger Tears (sizzling grilled steak) and BBQ Chicken Platter served with sticky rice and som tum, showcasing the heart of Esan street food.

For New Yorkers seeking a true and exciting departure from generic Thai takeout, Esan Thai (or Lan Larb) is a compelling choice. This restaurant is particularly worth choosing for three primary reasons: its regional authenticity, its exceptional value proposition, and its highly personalized service.

Unlike many general Thai establishments, the specialization in Esan/Northern Thai cuisine offers a richer, more complex flavor profile that utilizes unique ingredients and preparation methods. This is an opportunity to explore the diverse culinary landscape of Thailand without leaving Manhattan. Patrons repeatedly express their satisfaction with the "yummy food" and the bold, authentic taste that differentiates it in the local market.

In a city where dining costs are constantly rising, the "awesome, awesome, awesome" happy hour specials are a rare find. Having $2 beers and great cocktail prices on hand makes this a perfect neighborhood spot for unwinding after a long workday, or a pre-dinner destination before a night out in Midtown.

Finally, the customer experience is consistently highlighted as a key strength. The "top notch" service, as described by a local reviewer, includes genuine, friendly interactions and a willingness to share a passion for Thai culture. This level of warmth, coupled with the commitment to being a dedicated Vegetarian restaurant with creative offerings, makes Esan Thai a standout community establishment that offers great food and hospitality right in the heart of Murray Hill.
