Tha Phraya Introduce
For New Yorkers who appreciate a genuine and sophisticated journey through Thai gastronomy, Tha Phraya on the Upper East Side delivers an experience that is anything but typical. Pronounced “Tah Pra-Yaa,” the restaurant is named after the piers on the iconic Chao Phraya River, and its chic, stylish interior—sometimes noted for its red lamps and illuminated cityscape—is designed to evoke the energy and culinary diversity of Bangkok. This establishment has quickly become a standout, earning the prestigious MICHELIN Guide's Bib Gourmand designation for its good quality and good value cooking.
Tha Phraya is co-owned by Phuket-born Manna Che, whose vision was to bring a new, ambitious version of Thai food to Manhattan, moving beyond the few staple dishes that often define Thai cuisine in the West. The menu is a vibrant mosaic of traditional, homestyle recipes and street food favorites sourced from various regions of Thailand, all prepared with high-quality ingredients and a focus on authentic, robust flavors. Diners consistently praise the food for being "so flavorful and honestly memorable," a testament to the chef's commitment to culinary excellence.
The atmosphere is described as casual, cozy, and distinctly trendy, offering a sleek dining experience that many compare to downtown energy but situated conveniently uptown. It is a perfect setting for various occasions, being popular for lunch, dinner, and solo dining, with a vibrant energy that also appeals to groups and tourists. Patrons are advised to plan their visit, as the restaurant is very busy, especially during dinner, and dining time may be limited to 90 minutes during peak hours to accommodate demand.
Tha Phraya is ideally located in a bustling, high-traffic area of Manhattan's Upper East Side, making it a culinary destination for residents and visitors alike. It sits near the 81st Street cross-street, easily accessible via local transportation options.

The highlights include:

The Crab Fried Rice LAVA, featuring sweet jumbo crabmeat and topped with a lava crabmeat omelet, is a customer favorite.
- Regional Specialties: Savor the famous Northern Thai curry, Chicken Khao Soi, or the intensely flavored Southern dishes like Kang Pu (Jumbo lump crab in Phuket-style coconut curry with vermicelli noodles) and Koong Gaew (GF) (a marinated raw shrimp dish praised for its fiery garlic chili flavor). The Sai-Ua Spring Rolls offer a twist on Chiang Mai sausage.
- Unique Starters and Spicy Yum: Appetizers stand out, such as the homemade, juicy, and crispy Tod Mun Goong (shrimp cakes with ground pork) and the traditional Thai salad Yum Som-O (GF) (pomelo salad). For the adventurous, Pu Dong*** (ปูดอง)(GF) features marinated raw blue crab with spicy lime dressing.
- Noodle and Wok Variety: Beyond the standard Pad Thai and Pad See-Iw, try the Zabb Hang, a dry rice noodle dish with homemade brown sauce, sliced pork, and meatball that one reviewer preferred over Pad Thai for its enjoyment. Also featured is the smoky Stewed Beef Noodle in herbal beef broth.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1One of my favorite Thai spots in NYC. I’ve been here three times already and tried the seasonal menu this time. Everything here is so flavorful and honestly memorable. The shrimp with shrimp paste was crispy, juicy, and full of umami. The raw crab was super fresh with that fiery garlic chili flavor that hits just right. The fried fish rice was spicy, crunchy, and comforting. Every visit feels like discovering a new favorite, and it’s always worth the trip uptown.
October 09 · Y CWe visited this place upon the recommendation of a friend. The food is amazing and they are very prompt serving the dishes. The attentive staff refills our water without asking, ensuring we stay hydrated throughout our meal. We particularly enjoyed the Tod Mun Goong, a dish of juicy and crispy shrimp cakes with ground pork. It was so delicious that we’ll definitely return just for that.Another highlight was the Paloh Hang, a dish of tender meat served with a sweet sauce. It reminded us of Hamonado, a Filipino dish. We also tried the Zabb Hang, a dry rice noodle dish that we found more enjoyable than the Pad Thai. While the restaurant is very busy, especially during dinner, we recommend making reservations if you’re planning to dine with more than four people. Additionally, they only allow 90 minutes of dining, so be sure to plan accordingly.Overall, our experience at Paloh Hang was excellent and highly recommended.
September 29 · F GI cannot brag enough about this place! First of all, the menu is SO fun. Its hard to find something this authentic and with really fresh ingredients presented so beautifully 😍 The servers are so thoughtful and kind with EXCELLENT service! We got the appetizer with the Beetle leaves...which honestly was SO good and fresh. Ive never had that before and I was blown away. We got the pomello salad and the sauce on this was delicious! We got a Phuket crab curry to share and asked for medium spice level. Turns out we underestimated our spice tolerance 😅😅. They're not messin around! But the curry was SO delicious we just kept eating and struggling. The server saw us and got us a sweet iced thai tea (without milk because I had expressed not wanting milk in my food earlier) without even asking!!! HOW INCREDIBLY thoughtful 😭We got rose tea and one of the cocktails for drinks. Both were yummy. The star of the show was the mango sticky rice. This was certainly one of the best we've had in a long time! This place is SO cute! Even their bathroom decor is supper cute lol. Would highly recommend!
September 05 · Debarati DasFood portion is quite small. I would recommend Squid fish and beef over rice. Both dishes are flavorful and good quality of the meat. Red curry is a bit too sweet and duck meat inside was a little dry. And the crab fried rice was also below average in my opinion.
August 14 · Emily PanTha Phaya is a hidden gem in the neighborhood—one of those rare places you’re glad to stumble upon and even happier to return to. The food is authentically Thai, packed with vibrant flavors and beautifully presented. I've been here many times andeverything we tried was delicious. If you’re looking for real Thai food in a spot, Tha Phaya is it. Highly recommended.
