4.0
This Thai restaurant in the Broadway, Brooklyn area is truly unique. We stopped in for dinner around 9 PM, and as expected in New York, parking was tricky—we ended up parking about half a mile away and walking. The ambiance stood out immediately: very dimly lit, almost to the point where you could barely see your food, with low, close-set tables and eclectic décor. A Thai movie was projected on a big screen (without sound), which added to the charm. However, we were seated next to a rack filled with condiments, possibly fish sauce, which gave off a strong odor that was a little distracting. For appetizers, we tried the steamed dumplings (shumai style), stuffed with chicken and shrimp. They arrived hot, juicy, and perfectly steamed, with a light soy-based dipping sauce—simple but excellent. For my main, I ordered my go-to Thai dish: minced meat with basil, served with rice. The portion was generous enough that I had leftovers for lunch the next day. It was flavorful, though I wished for a bit more chili heat and a stronger punch of basil. A fried egg on top would have been the perfect touch but was missing. My husband chose a soupy noodle dish with a curry-like broth and chicken. The broth was mild but aromatic, the chicken tender, and the fried noodles added nice texture. The menu itself was fairly small but thoughtfully curated, with some interesting options like Wagyu beef.Overall, despite the very dim lighting and the occasional strong condiment smell, the food was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. I’d recommend this spot for anyone looking for a slightly off-beat but tasty Thai dining experience in Brooklyn. - Debisree Ray

Mao Mao Introduce

Mao Mao is a distinctive and highly acclaimed Thai restaurant and bar that has firmly established itself as a must-visit culinary destination in the Brooklyn food scene. Located at 1000 Broadway, this eatery transports New Yorkers directly to the authentic street food culture of Thailand, with a particular focus on the bold, fiery, and deeply flavorful dishes of the Northeastern Isaan region. The philosophy here is to capture the essence of old-school Thai dining, offering traditional recipes that pair perfectly with a creative bar program.

Stepping into Mao Mao is an experience in itself. The atmosphere is celebrated for being Casual, Cozy, and Trendy, with a unique, memorable cinema-themed decor that sets it apart from typical New York restaurants. Customers often describe the ambiance as dimly lit and quirky, with corrugated metal walls, vintage posters, and a large screen projecting silent Thai action films. This playful, off-beat setting, combined with comfortable, if sometimes close-set, seating (including lecture-hall style chairs), contributes to a dynamic and exciting night out. It’s a favorite among locals for Lunch, Dinner, and Solo dining, and is particularly popular for its extensive bar offerings and Late-night food options.

The menu at Mao Mao is a masterclass in regional Thai cuisine, deliberately featuring dishes beyond the usual Pad Thai staples, although comforting classics are certainly available. A key highlight is the selection of Khaem lao Thai drinking snacks—small, addictive bites designed to accompany the restaurant's robust Alcohol and Cocktail offerings. These include FRIED PEANUTS W. LEMONGRASS, LIME LEAVES, AND SALT and the addictive THAILAND’S FAMOUSLY ADDICTIVE CRUNCHY FRIED CHILIES. The small plates section is also filled with unique items like the NORTHEASTERN THAI PORK AND PORK SKIN SAUSAGE W. SOUR FLAVOR.

The main dishes showcase the restaurant’s commitment to authentic street and regional Thai favorites. The Large Plates feature highly-praised classics such as the SLOW POACHED CHICKEN W. CHICKEN FAT RICE (Khao Mun Gai), which is frequently cited as a standout, and the comforting CHICKEN BREAST AND POTATO IN MASSAMAN CURRY OVER RICE. The influence of Chinese-Thai cooking is also evident in the THAI-CHINESE STYLE ROAST PORK OVER RICE (Kao Moo Dang). For lovers of Northern Thai cuisine, the Khao Soi Noodle Soup is another must-try signature dish.

Perhaps the most exciting section is Tun & Yum, which dives deep into the spicy, acidic, and herb-forward flavors of Isaan food. This includes various preparations of Laab, a meat salad, such as MINCED CHICKEN LAAB and the traditional ISAAN STYLE BEEF LAMB, W. COW BILE (DEE WUA) for the adventurous palate. The soups are equally intense, exemplified by the BRUTALLY SPICY & SOUR SLOW-COOK PORK WITH LIME, FRESH CHILI, CILANTRO AND GREEN ONION (Leng Zabb), known for its ferocious heat and powerful flavor profile.
