Chick It Out " Khao Man Gai" Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a genuine taste of Thailand's most beloved street food, Chick It Out "Khao Man Gai" stands out as an exceptional destination in the heart of Astoria, Queens. Specializing in Khao Man Gai (literally, "Chicken and Rice"), this local establishment captures the simple perfection and rich flavor profile of authentic Bangkok cuisine. The dish, a Thai adaptation of Hainanese chicken rice, is a celebration of perfectly cooked chicken and aromatic rice, and Chick It Out’s commitment to quality makes it a local favorite.
The founders' passion for this simple yet profound dish is deeply rooted, with the chef having opened his first Khao Man Gai restaurant in Bangkok over 20 years ago. This heritage is evident in every plate served, ensuring that the flavors are authentic and steeped in tradition. Customers rave about the dining experience, often noting the impeccable customer service and the genuine "love in each bite," suggesting a dedication that elevates the meal from a quick bite to an exceptional dining experience.
Chick It Out has mastered the core elements of the dish: the chicken, the rice, and the sauce. They offer a comprehensive selection of chicken styles, ensuring there's a version for every preference. From "The Original" poached chicken—tender and silky—to "The Cutlet" fried chicken and "The Roasted" marinated chicken, all are served over their signature ginger rice, which customers describe as so delicious it’s hard to stop eating. Each main dish is traditionally accompanied by fresh cucumber, a small bowl of light, comforting chicken soup (known as Daikon Soup here, available as a side), and a selection of house-made sauces.
Beyond the signature chicken rice, the menu is a thoughtful curation of Thai comfort food, ensuring a satisfying meal for any craving. Highlights include spicy and sour Tom Yum Noodle Soup, a comforting "hug for the soul," and various traditional Thai salads like Som Tum (Papaya Salad) in several styles, including the authentic Som Tum Pla Ra with fermented fish sauce, which brings a welcome kick of heat and flavor complexity. The inclusion of dishes like Pa-Lo Moo Sam Chan (Braised Pork Belly) and Singapore Hainanese Chicken Rice on the Chef's Special menu shows an appreciation for regional Southeast Asian chicken-and-rice variations, adding unique breadth to their offerings.
Chick It Out is designed to be a comfortable and welcoming spot for the Astoria community. The atmosphere is casual, family-friendly, and popular for solo diners grabbing lunch or couples enjoying a hearty dinner. Their comprehensive service options, from delivery to a dedicated children's menu, make it a convenient and thoughtful dining choice for almost any occasion. As one reviewer noted, this is truly a local business New Yorkers will want to support, thanks to its combination of high-quality, authentic food and friendly, caring service.
The commitment to authenticity extends to the beverage and dessert menus, featuring classic Thai Iced Tea (Cha Yen) and unique sweet drinks like Nom Yen (Thai fruit syrup mixed with milk) and Milo Yen, alongside traditional desserts like Sweet Sticky Rice With Mango and Thai Coconut Pudding. This attention to a full, authentic Thai street food experience is what makes Chick It Out a culinary gem in the Astoria neighborhood.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1A taste of authentic Bangkok in the heart of Astoria. Had the fried chicken curry plate where the aromatic rice was so delicious I couldn’t stop eating it. We also had the spicy Tom yum chicken soup.. it was like a hug for the soul. Along with the Som Tum pla ra (papaya salat with anchovies 🥰) Just what we needed after walking around Astoria. The customer service was impeccable. It’s always an exceptional dining experience when the people who work there genuinely love what they are serving. You can genuinely taste the love in each bite! We will definitely be boarding from here a lot more and trying everything else on the menu. This is a local business you want to support. Trust me!
April 13 · Reeves MadduxSecond time trying this place and was just as amazing as the first time. We had The Original, The Roasted, and Som Tum Thai (Papaya Salad). Highly recommended!
August 12 · KamiSo I 'Chicked it out'. Honest opinion. Not impressed.Passed by this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. Was craving a chicken dinner. Went in around 830pm, they close at 930pm. Did not think that would be an issue. I ordered the fried chicken cutlet over rice it looked good from another reviewers post. After ordering the lady in the kitchen said something in another language to the lady taking our order. Then we hear from the lady taking our ordee that it will be about 15 / 20 minutes as if they are bothered by that order. I see they sre actively cleaning the kitchen. There was a guy scrubbing pots. I was so hungry I went with the non fried chicken instead. What could go wrong, and I felt like it was the healthier option anyway.Took the food to go.Verdict. It tasted bland. Not flavorful at all. I had to force myself to eat it. Didn't taste anything like I would have expected. I didnt enjoy it. For 32 bucks, not worth it.I also ordered a thai mango ice tea for 4 dollars. The cup was full of ice... very little tea. Seriously, check the picture i attached. I didnt feel welcomed, they rushed us out. They are supposed to close at 930. If they dont want customers at 830, then they should say they close at 830pm. I hate that. Wasted my money. I do not recommend ever! Doesnt taste like thai food, chicken is bland.
April 23 · MichaelTook me awhile to find this place because it's not exactly on Broadway but on the corner so it's fairly easy to miss if you're not aware of the location. Other than that, this place is sublime. A tad on the small side but I dig the theme of the restaurant for it gives off an authentic Thai feel. The server was very courteous and kind which made ordering a pleasant experience. All of the dishes are very reminiscent of whenever I go to Hainan Jones for lunch because the menu is very similar to that. I ordered the Roasted chicken with rice, dumplings and Iced Tea. Their Iced Tea is an unusual but interesting beverage. It's your standard Iced Tea but mixed with milk, at first I was thrown off a bit like "Who mixes Iced Tea with milk?" But when I took a sip, it was surprisingly good, it was enjoyable. The main dish and the side were oh so tasty and filling, it definitely hit the spot. Some stuff on the menu were more pricier than others but worth it nonetheless. I totally recommend this hole in the wall spot with excellent cuisine.
February 01 · Sledge WilliamsWas craving some Hainan Chicken rice so came here for it. For the price, they gave me so much chicken which I always appreciate. The food was delicious too. Definitely recommend!
