Somtum Der Introduce
For New Yorkers who consider themselves true aficionados of Thai cuisine, Somtum Der in the East Village is an essential destination. This is not your average, sugar-toned neighborhood Thai spot; this is an uncompromised culinary journey into the heart of Thailand’s Northeastern region, known as Isan. Somtum Der specializes in the bold, spicy, and fiercely authentic flavors of Isan cuisine, a style notably distinct from the central Thai food commonly found in the United States. Our dedication to genuine regional recipes, which use more chili, unique herbs, and less sugar, is precisely why the restaurant has garnered international acclaim, including recognition from the prestigious Michelin Guide.
The restaurant's namesake, Som Tum (or green papaya salad), is the centerpiece of the menu, offered in eight different authentic variations. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is vibrant, casual, and trendy, with a lively energy that reflects the convivial, shared-dish style of Isan eating culture. It is a place that celebrates big, strong flavors—a fact proudly highlighted in customer reviews, which note that we "don’t try to change the flavor profiles to best suit Western tastes." Somtum Der is a must-try for locals seeking the spicy, herby, and wonderfully complex taste of real Thailand.
We welcome a diverse crowd, including college students, local residents, groups of friends looking for a fun night out, and tourists searching for an authentic experience. Our commitment to preserving the integrity of Isan gastronomy has made us a staple in the NYC food scene since our New York debut, following the success of our original branch in Bangkok.

What is Worth Choosing
When dining at Somtum Der, the best experience comes from embracing the authentic Isan tradition of ordering multiple small dishes to share, balancing the intense flavors and textures.
The signature dish, which is a non-negotiable must-try, is any of the Somtum (Papaya Salad) varieties. The Tum Thai Kai Kem ($16.00), made with salted egg, offers a creamy counterpoint to the chili heat and is an excellent choice for first-timers. For the adventurous palate, the Tum Poo-Plara ($17.00), featuring fresh water crab and authentic fermented fish sauce, delivers the true, funky flavor of Isan.
Another perennial favorite is the Sa Poak Kai Tod Der ($16.00), a deep-fried chicken thigh that customers obsess over for its crispy exterior and tender meat, served with a chili-tamarind dipping sauce. From the Larb and Spicy Salad section, the Larb Moo ($16.00)—a spicy minced pork salad mixed with toasted rice powder and fresh herbs—is highly recommended for its complex flavor profile.
While the focus is Isan, our wok-fried dishes are also exceptionally good. The Pad Thai Crab Meat ($27.00) has been heralded as "Holy Crab!" and is an elevated version of the classic noodle dish, showcasing the commitment to using fresh, quality seafood. For a simple but satisfying side, ensure you order Steamed Sticky Rice ($3.00), which is essential for soaking up the delicious, spicy sauces. Finally, many customers swear by the Taro In Condensed Coconut Milk ($10.00) or the Mango Sticky Rice (seasonal item noted in reviews) for a beautifully sweet and refreshing end to the meal, calling it the best they have had in the city. Come prepared for bold, unadulterated flavors that will truly transport your taste buds to Thailand's vibrant Northeast.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1One of the most authentic Thai restaurants in NYC! 🇹🇭 Every dish I tried was packed with flavor and transported me straight to Thailand. Their mango sticky rice is hands down the best I’ve had in the city, so fresh, juicy, and perfectly sweet, even when other spots are out of seasonal mangoes. I’m also obsessed with their prawn sashimi, crispy fried chicken, and pad thai. Each one beautifully seasoned, balanced, and comforting in the best way. If you’re a real Thai food lover, this place is a must-try. I’m already planning my next visit!
September 06 · Bella LuHoly Crab! The Crab Pad Thai is so good! I love how each dish is thoughtfully plated to elevate your dining experience right from the get go.Then you’d find out that each dish is full of bold flavors. Somtum Der is exceptionally good (as agreed by their Michelin) because they bring to us authentic Northeastern Thai food, specifically Isan cuisines. They don’t try to change the flavor profiles to best suit Western tastes, instead, they keep their original bold flavors. That is why they are exceptionally tasty!
May 19 · Sammi ChanFrom the warm decor and splash of Thai flair, stepping in feels like a little trip to Thailand. The specials -- tender ribs and pork satay -- join their iconic crispy fried chicken and grilled marinated beef to bring bold Isan flavors straight from Thailand. This place is definitely must-visit!Follow me @foodie.elite on IG and Tiktok for more!❤️
September 01 · Foodie EliteSomtum Der in NYC is the real deal if you’re looking for authentic Isan (Northeastern Thai) food. The flavors are bold, spicy, and exactly what you’d expect straight from Bangkok. They earned a Michelin Star back in 2016 and it makes sense why everything feels fresh, balanced, and full of flavor. The papaya salad with grilled pork neck (Tum Kor Moo Yang) was perfectly spicy and tangy, the Isan summer roll was light and refreshing, and the grilled marinated pork with coconut sticky rice was incredible. I also tried the duck larb and the basil fried rice both packed with flavor and spice that isn’t watered down for western tastes. If you love Thai food and want the authentic version, this is a must-visit in NYC.
September 01 · Lauren SI'm allergic to wheat and dairy and this place had a menu specifically for gluten free. The meal was fantastic; I got the pad thai, which I know is such a basic order, but I knew I'd receive the most authentic pad thai i can get. It was phenomenal, and I can't wait to go back.
