Thai Market Introduce
New York City is a global food capital, and for residents on the Upper West Side (UWS) and in the Morningside Heights area, the search for truly authentic and high-quality Thai cuisine often leads to one destination: Thai Market. Located just steps from Columbia University, this restaurant has established itself as a vibrant and essential part of the neighborhood's dining scene, offering an escape into the rich, bold, and diverse flavors of Thai street food and traditional market-style cooking. The atmosphere, often described as cozy and trendy, features unique decor with Bangkok street signs and photo murals that transport you out of the bustle of Amsterdam Avenue.
Thai Market excels at providing a comprehensive Thai culinary experience, from familiar favorites to dishes that are less common in typical New York Thai establishments. The menu is notably voluminous, ensuring that both the adventurous diner and the lover of classics will find something to savor. They are particularly popular among college students, local residents, and tourists alike, drawing crowds for their consistent quality and enjoyable atmosphere. The restaurant’s commitment to using quality ingredients is evident in every dish, providing a genuinely flavorful and satisfying meal.
The starters section, aptly named 'Thai Market Starters,' showcases a range of enticing small plates. Highlights include the crispy fried Gui Chai Tod (chive cake) and the savory Daikon Cake, a house specialty often recommended by the efficient staff. For those who enjoy seafood, the crispy Calamari with a spicy plum sauce and the fried Goong Todd (garlic shrimp) are excellent choices. A more distinctive offering is the Larb Salmon, featuring pan-roasted minced salmon flavored with chili, mint, and lemongrass—a tart and herbaceous dish served with fresh lettuce leaves.
Noodles and soups are cornerstones of Thai cuisine, and Thai Market delivers on both counts. Their noodle dishes go beyond the popular *Pad Thai* ($17.95) and *Pad Se-Ew* ($17.95) to include regional specialties like Kow Soy ($17.95), a flavorful and creamy curry-based noodle dish that has garnered high praise from customers for its tender chicken and rich sauce. The spicy Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles, $17.95) is another frequently mentioned favorite, with one customer noting its great flavor even when ordered mild. The soup selection is equally comforting, featuring the classic hot and sour Tom Yum Goong ($10.95) and the fragrant, coconut-milk-based Tom Kha Gai ($9.95).
The 'Main Course' section offers a vast selection of curries, stir-fries, and specialty meat dishes. The curries, such as Green Curry ($17.95) and Pa-Nang Curry ($17.95), are rich with coconut milk and authentic chili paste. For something more unique, diners can opt for the hearty Chicken Massaman ($18.95) with potato, onion, peanut, and avocado, or the premium Duck Panang** ($31.95), featuring crispy half-duck fillet in a rich curry sauce. Seafood lovers will appreciate the high-end offerings like Salmon Peppercorn Curry ($29.95) and the crispy Soft Shell Crab ($31.95). Furthermore, the restaurant provides excellent vegetarian and vegan options, with dedicated menu sections for dishes like Tofu Pra-Ram and Eggplant Thai Basil, and the ability to make many curries vegan upon request.
Thai Market is centrally located on the Upper West Side, making it a convenient stop for students, residents, and visitors exploring upper Manhattan.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1You NEED to go here if you’re at Columbia or in the Upper West Side. Probably one of the best Thai spots I’ve been to. We got the pad ki Mao & pra ram tofu. SO GOOD. The rice is perfect, and on top of that the service is amazing. They’re super quick, always come and ask if you want anything, their hot sauces have all 4 of the sauces (the spicy pepper, small fresh pickled peppers, chili sauce… and one that I forget, because I don’t usually eat it). They have 2 bathrooms in the back, and the location is super cute.
August 06 · Ravi KuraniI gave a 4 because of the customer service but food overall was really good, the interior is nice, cool and chilled. The Steamed Thai dumpling were amazing and tasty, the pad kee mao was very good and I asked for mild, the kow soy was good, not too spicy at all, chicken was very tender and the sauce was flavorful and creamy.
August 19 · Bridget OrtegaOvercast Sunday random walk-in got us here. The place was not busy and we got an amazing window seat and got straight to ordering which included Kow Soy ($17.95), Vegetable Curry ($17.95) and, Curry Rice ($2.50) - a side portion which was enough to feed our little one!Food overall was inline with expectations; nothing spectacular, but not disappoint either. Not much spice kick, but the Kow Soy was packed with flavor and the Vegetable Curry, not so much! Decent portion sizes too.Service was slightly slow, but food arrived within 25-mins of ordering. Noise levels on the lower end. Will visit again for sure!
May 08 · Ameya BhakayBEST thai restaurant I have ever been to in America simply phenomenal in my opinion. The duck was outstanding and even with all the the sauce it was so crispy and melted in your mouth the meat was so tender and the curry sauce was so creamy. The appetizer was also really good and the filling was very tender and juicy. The GPKD was also great and spicy however quite salty. Highly recommend.
September 21 · Jane AhmonThe food at Thai Market is possibly the best Thai food I have had in the US. Everything we have tried over many visits has been consistently delicious, including the Branzino, Salmon, Chicken Massaman, Pad Thai, Calamari and Chicken Sate. The only problem is that is now so popular that there is often a 1 hour wait.
